Safety Engineer

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Safety Engineer with avionics and military aircraft integration expertise to support the E-767 AWACS Radio System Upgrade (RSU) program. This role will lead system safety activities for the integration of advanced airborne communications systems, including ARC-210 SATURN radios, HF radios, mission computing interfaces, cryptographic equipment, and aircraft modifications.
The successful candidate will ensure compliance with military airworthiness, system safety, environmental, and cybersecurity requirements throughout the system lifecycle, from design and integration through testing, certification, and fielding. This position works closely with systems engineering, avionics, software, flight test, airworthiness authorities, and government stakeholders to ensure safe and effective mission system integration.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain an Aircraft System Safety Program in accordance with MIL-STD-882E.
- Develop and maintain the System Safety Program Plan (SSPP).
- Lead and conduct System Hazard Analyses (SHA), Subsystem Hazard Analyses (SSHA), Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Preliminary Hazard Analyses (PHA), and Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analyses (FMECA).
- Identify, mitigate, and track safety risks throughout development, integration, test, installation, and fielding.
- Maintain hazard tracking systems and support closure of identified hazards.
- Prepare and deliver System Safety Hazard Analysis Reports (SSHAR).
- Develop Airworthiness Certification Basis documentation.
- Support compliance reviews, risk assessments, and certification reviews.
- Ensure safety-related evidence supports flight clearance and military flight release decisions.
- Support approval and clearance activities for aircraft modifications and test programs.
- Assess impacts to aircraft subsystems and disturbed systems resulting from modifications.
- Review installation designs, drawings, interface documentation, and test procedures for safety compliance.
- Support development of Reliability, Maintainability & Testability (RM&T) analyses.
- Review reliability predictions using MIL-HDBK-217 methodologies.
- Conduct FMECA assessments utilizing MIL-STD-1629 guidance.
- Evaluate safety impacts of equipment failures, degraded modes, and abnormal operating conditions.
- Participate in design reviews and risk boards.
- Assist in development and review of environmental verification plans and reports.
- Present safety findings, mitigation strategies, and residual risk assessments to internal and customer leadership.
- Support customer working groups and engineering review boards.
- Support aircraft ground and flight test safety planning.
- Review qualification and acceptance test plans.
- Assess safety impacts of test procedures and execution.
- Evaluate and disposition test deficiencies with engineering teams.
- Support final acceptance and certification activities.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Avionics Engineering, Safety Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical discipline.
Experience
- 9+ years of System Safety Engineering experience.
- 5+ years supporting military aircraft or avionics programs.
- Experience conducting safety analyses for aircraft modifications, mission systems, communications systems, or avionics upgrades.
- Experience supporting airworthiness certification efforts.
- Experience working in a DoD acquisition environment.
- Excellent leadership, communication, problem-solving, and customer relationship management skills.
- Experience with AWACS, ISR, C2, airborne communications, or large aircraft mission systems.
