Country Oven Bakery, a subsidiary of Kroger Co., will invest $10.6 million and add 33 jobs in Bowling Green, Ky., according to a news release from the state of Kentucky.

The Bowling Green bakery, in the southwestern part of the state, currently employs about 450 workers with a total annual payroll of $22.3 million. The new jobs will have an average annual wage of nearly $50,000, including benefits.

Country Oven makes frozen dough products, breads and iced cakes for Kroger.

Through the expansion, it will add 50,000 square-feet to the company’s existing 177,000 square-foot facility for a second cake line.

The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority has granted Kroger preliminary approval for tax incentives of as much as $825,000 through the Kentucky Business Investment Program.

The incentive can be earned over a 10-year period through corporate income tax credits and wage assessments.

Cincinnati-based Kroger (NYSE: KR) is one of the nation’s largest grocery store chains, employing more than 334,000 associates at 2,468 supermarkets and multi-department stores. It operates in 31 states under names such as Kroger, City Market, Dillons, Jay C, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Ralphs and Smith’s. The company also operates 777 convenience stores, 374 fine jewelry stores, 893 supermarket fuel centers and 40 food processing plants in the United States.
